For SightLife, 2014 was a year of unprecedented growth, significant challenges, and major steps forward.
That seems appropriate for an organization that has more than doubled in size over the past five years.
This remarkable growth is indicative of our progress in eliminating corneal blindness, a global health problem that diminishes and endangers the lives of millions around the world.
Within the next 25 years, we will restore sight to the millions currently waiting in darkness, enabling them to pursue their dreams and live life to the fullest. We will simultaneously build up a global eye banking system to ensure that anyone who needs a corneal transplant will have access to one. We are grateful for your partnership in this transformational mission.
Your generous support in 2014 helped 20,807 individuals around the world receive the gift of sight. Because of you, children are returning to the classroom, adults are rejoining the work force, and the elderly are watching their grandchildren grow and thrive.
Last year, SightLife made possible more than 8,000 transplants in the U.S. alone, a 21 percent increase over 2013. In addition, we joined forces with Ocular Systems, a leading processor of corneas for endothelial keratoplasty (EK) and a manufacturer of the leading medical device used in EK.
We also moved to an expanded global headquarters in Seattle. Our new home more than doubles our lab and office space, and is sufficient to accommodate the ambitious growth we project in coming years.
At the same time, it was a challenging year for our activities in India. There was a six-percent drop in corneas provided by our partners, which was disappointing. However, this setback has only strengthened our resolve to adjust our strategies and ensure that we reach our goals. We have already begun to make important changes and are seeing strong results as 2015 unfolds.
As we move forward, we want to thank you for the trust you've placed in us. We are honored and humbled to be your partner in this life-changing work and are emboldened by your support. With your continued partnership, someday soon, millions will have the opportunity to see the world through new eyes.
Yours in restoring sight,
